Consumers’ Desire for Local, Organic Food Drives Online Grocery Business

June 28, 2013 by

Source – Press Republican: “Just a few years ago, consumers who were fervent about eating locally-grown and organic foods had to head out to the nearest Whole Foods or farmers market. Now all it takes is a few swipes of the mouse at an online grocer like Door to Door Organics, Relay Foods or AmazonFresh, which last week confirmed it was beginning to roll out its online shopping product beyond its home base of Seattle, opening operations in Los Angeles.”

Organically Speaking: Sales of Organic Products on the Rise

June 25, 2013 by

Source agrinews: “Organic foods have gone from being specialty items in health food stores to lining the shelves of mainstream supermarkets. Sales of organic products have climbed from $3.6 billion to $24.4 billion in the past 10 years alone, but many consumers don’t know what makes a food organic and whether the label is worth paying for, according to a University of Illinois Extension nutrition and wellness educator. When products seem to be identical in nutrients and quality, consumers don’t know which one to purchase,” said Mekenzie Lewis, who provided information that will educate consumers so they can make their own decisions based on their level of concern about pesticides, their budget and other considerations.

Organic Farmers Go To War with Monsanto in Court

June 23, 2013 by

Source naturalnews: “It has become quite obvious that organic farmers have been taken advantage of by food giant Monsanto for some time now. In a court case involving organic farmers and seed producers, suits filed against Monsanto didn’t play out as planned. This case was put before the United States court system as a precautionary measure for farmers in the case that genetically engineered crops “accidentally” end up on organic farmland.”

Organic vs. conventional produce?

June 19, 2013 by

Source winonadailynews: “As a supermarket dietitian, I spend a great deal of time promoting a wide variety of foods and the health benefits they offer. The question many have concerning food is: “Should I buy conventional or organic?” There seems to be this food fight across the nation arguing which is better – conventional or organically raised foods. The two sides battle back and forth looking for the one right answer. But the topic is very complex, with many factors and variables that come into play. It’s very difficult for there to be one right answer. Consider that there may be a way to co-exist and find a balance in attitudes toward our food production and all methods of farming. Here are some facts to consider.”

Organic vs Conventional Foods: Who Will Emerge Victorious?

June 18, 2013 by

Source hivehealthmedia: “Welcome to the great sparring match of the last decade, often fought on the grocery store shelves. In the blue corner, the fresh-faced yet immature organic food. Flashy and unpredictable, you never know if it will live up to the hype. In the red corner sits the ever-reliable conventional food. Much more modest and often predictable, you always know it’ll perform well. So who wins? Based on the history between the two, this contest is going the full twelve rounds.”

According to the latest global census of farming practices, the area of land certified as organic makes up less than one percent of global agricultural land — but it has grown more than threefold since 1999, with upwards of 37 million hectares of land worldwide now under organic cultivation. The Organic Trade Association forecasts steady growth of nine percent or more annually for organic agriculture in the foreseeable future.”

Organically Speaking – Would Americans Be Better Off Eating a Mostly Organic Diet?

June 17, 2013 by

Source WSJ: “Sales of organic food have been rising steadily over the past decade, reaching almost $30 billion in 2011, or 4.2% of all U.S. food and beverage sales, according to the Organic Trade Association. Many of the consumers who purchase these products say paying more for organic produce, milk and meat is a trade-off they are willing to make in order to avoid exposure to chemical pesticides and fertilizers and milk from cows given bovine growth hormone. But other families—especially those whose food budgets may be more limited—wonder if organic food is really worth its hefty price tag.”
